Do you have an AU that you wished more people knew about? Feel free to comment here with general gushing to entice more people to be interested in it!
Some loose guidelines about what to put in your AU promo post:
- Is this based on a specific canon? If so, where would you find it/how do you recommend people get into it?
- If it’s not based on a specific canon please give us a general description of it!
- What parts of it do you like best?
- What sorts of requests are you planning to make about it?

Date: 2024-11-17 10:51 pm (UTC)This is based on "The Luminaries" by Eleanor Catton. The book was published in 2013 and is hopefully widely available at libraries etc (it also got turned into a TV series, I'm not sure to what extent the trope is explained/leaned into). If you want a non-spoilery pitch, the book is about an ensemble cast during the New Zealand gold rush of 1865-66, and features a lot of mathematical constraints in terms of the decreasing chapter lengths, and astrological symbology in terms of the characters (some are associated with the signs of the zodiac, others with planets). The relationship in question is between Anna Wetherell and Emery Staines, personified as the new and old faces of the moon.
The trope premise
It turns out that Anna and Emery were both born under the exact same sky--same location and same time. When they sleep together, it creates a bond between them, so that when one of them is shot or overdoses on drugs, the other experiences the wound/physical effects. The book is otherwise realistic fiction so the characters are not genre-savvy about what's going on; once they figure it out, they have to create some wild cover stories in order to conceal the stranger-than-fiction reality.
I'm specifically interested in how this premise might interact with Wheel of Time. There are already canonical magical bonds and it could be played off as "oh, the Pattern has decreed you two share a destiny." But even more:
spoilers for WoT show season 1 and book 1
Mat, Perrin, and Rand (and in the show, Egwene) are all very close in age. In the book, Moiraine isn't able to tell who's the Dragon, because the boys were born only a couple weeks apart; she finds a couple other boys in the village whose birthdays are eight or ten months off, and knows enough to rule them out. So I think it would be fun if two (or three) of them shared a birthday, and were both born in Emond's Field, and maybe fooled around with each other when they were young...or when they were nervous on the road running for their lives...and now have a bond that even the Aes Sedai don't understand, and have to figure that out along with all the other plot shenanigans. And/or, what if Rand had also slept with one/several of them, and it didn't trigger a bond, and that was the first clue that he wasn't actually born in the same place as the others...?

Date: 2024-11-19 12:13 am (UTC)The idea of the Vees being the Hotel's hoteliers is super interesting. Especially with them still being somewhat selfish beings, but still using all their power and influence for Charlie's dreams? It's just a fascinating "swap", without actually being a swap. Because Vox has a Plan TM and who knows what that is.
I'd probably be wanting something with Vox, Val, Vel, Vaggie, and Charlie. Val/Vox and Charlie/Vaggie/Vel abound!
